Long-term solution for obesity
Obesity is a national epidemic that is a life-threatening disease. Obesity is not just an issue of appearance, but rather subjects the obese to hypertension, high cholesterol, liver disease, type 2 diabetes, respiratory and joint ailments as well as higher risks of colorectal and other cancers. It is important to understand obesity should not be viewed as a personal failure, but rather a disease with many causes and requires aggressive treatment.
In general, there are three leading types of minimally invasive, or laparoscopic, bariatric surgery. The specific solution to the type of laparoscopic surgery is determined by the surgeon based on numerous factors. The leading types of laparoscopic bariatric surgery are:
- Gastric band surgery places a small band around the neck of the stomach to slow the passage of food into the stomach, resulting in a decrease of appetite and an increased sense of fullness.
- A sleeve gastrectomy removes a majority of the stomach.
- A gastric bypass creates a smaller stomach.
