Should I see a Geriatrician
Older adults have unique health care needs and may benefit from seeing a geriatrician, although it is not always the case. Overall and general health, rather than age, really determines the need for specialized geriatric care. Many older adults have multiple chronic health problems, including memory problems, mental health issues, cardiovascular disease, etc. Many of these problems are among a group of ailments that may be interrelated age-associated disorders called "geriatric syndrome".
Geriatric professionals also have a special expertise in caring for patients taking multiple medications. Since drugs and interactions among medications may cause unwanted side effects, including falls and memory problems, geriatricians try to limit, when possible, the number of drugs taken.
