Importance of socialization for seniors
One major difference between pre-retirement and post-retirement years is the easy access to socialization. During working years you get out of the house and interact with others so it was easy to get involved in conversation and other social interactions. After retirement the need to socialize remains an important element in keeping active and healthy, but much more effort is required.
It is not that hard to find individuals with similar interests and goals. Some things to consider include:
- Volunteer in your community.
- Take classes at a college or university. Many institutions offer free or discounted rates for seniors.
- Attend clubs at senior centers or houses of worship.
- Join a special interest group or club centered around your hobbies or interests.
- Carefully seek out an on-line social networking group to connect with people.
Volunteer opportunities are abundant and can provide an enriching experience. The energy and commitment reminds us how we can enhance the lives of others while knowing that we are making a contribution that will make us feel better about ourselves. Some volunteering ideas include:
- Go to group meal sites and volunteer to help cook, serve, clean-up or deliver food to homebound seniors.
- Act ascort and provide transportation for older adults who cannot drive.
- Help other seniors with minor home repairs, shopping and errands.
- Provide counseling, information and companionship to a homebound individual.
