Glossary
There may be many terms which are new to you. To help better understand the web portal, this Glossary may be of use.
- Web portal - a collection of web pages to allow navigating and browsing a multitude functions.
- Web site - a location on the internet to present information to a user.
- Web page - an individual page making up part of a web site. For example, the page you are reading now - Glossary - is a web page.
- Browser - the program used to allow you to see pages on the internet. As examples, you may use a browser from Yahoo, AOL, Mozilla Firefox, MAC, etc. as the program to allow you to read and interact with the internet.
- Address bar - the space at the too of the screen, usually starting with "http" or "https" which tells you the actual name of the page you are looking at.
- Home page - a page that is used to start your web browsing experience. A home page can usually be set up to allow for easy connection to the things you like to do most, or most often use, on the internet.
- HTML – Hyper Text Markup Language - one of the primary programming languages for web pages. HTML contains codes of instruction so that the browser know how to display content in a way that is best for the reader.
- URL – Uniform Resouce Locater - the location of a web page. This is usually the information that is shown in the address bar. It is not that different than your home address so that visitors can find your location, as it defines exactly where on the internet the information is found.
- Domain or Domain name - the primary name for a web site, such as in our case "MySeniorPortal". MySeniorPortal is the domain under which we can be found and we store our web pages.
