Tips for those living alone
Living alone poses certain vulnerability, but paying attention to some small things can help make you safer. Among the steps to think about include:
- Don't advertise that you live alone.
- List your phone number with just your first initial and your last name.
- If you live in an apartment just show your last name on your mailbox.
- Record an answering machine greeting that says - "We aren't here right now . . ."
- Ask for ID before letting service people in your home.
- Call 9-1-1 if you hear noises or see anything suspcious near your home.
- When your doorbell rings, call out - I'll get it" before you answer the door.
- Keep your screen door locked or the chain-lock in place when you answer the door.
- Don't let strangers in.
- If someone needs help, offer to call the police while the person waits outside.
Do not hesitate to ever call the police if you have any suspicions about issues to your safety, that is what they are trained and paid to handle.
If you are going to be away from your home for a few days or more, consider the following precautions to help you feel more secure:
- Make sure all locks are engaged.
- Have a friend pick up your mail and newspaper every day.
- If you have a driveway, ask a neighbor to park their car in your driveway.
- Never leave a note on your door to say you are away and will return at some specific time.
- If, upon returning, you notice anything amiss, such as an open door or window, immediately leave the house and call 9-1-1.
- Never leave a spare key under the doormat or in your mailbox, but rather leave it with a neighbor you trust.
