Some ways to help slow global warming right from home
Energy conservation, green technology, environmentally safe are some of the buzzwords associated with initiatives to slow global warming. Below are some simple changes to incorporate in your daily life.
- Use recycled paper goods to reduce waste and prevent carbon dioxide emissions into the atmosphere.
- Invest in a water filter and bottle your own water instead of buying bottled water.
- Use stainless steel, ceramic or cast iron cookware. Cookware with nonstick coatings may release toxic funds when cooking at high temperatures.
- Opt for fluorescent light bulbs rather than incandescent bulbs.
- Fix leaky faucets to conserve water.
- Use non-toxic/natural ingredient cleaners like baking soda and/or vinegar instead of commercial cleaners with fragrances, chlorine ammonia and harsh solvents.
- Run the dishwasher only when it is full and make sure it is on energy-save mode. If you do not have a dishwasher, wash dishes in a full sink of water rather than running water.
- Replace damaged microwave ovens. Damaged microwave ovens may expose food to radiation. Use microwave-safe containers and/or dishes and an appropriate lid. Use a paper towel to cover your food instead of a plastic wrap. When refrigerating leftovers use plastic food containers with the following recycling safety codes:
- #1 PETE
- #2 HDPE
- #4 LDPE
- #5 PP
- Try to avoid using plastic food containers with the recycling code #7 as they may contain Bisphenol A (BPA), a chemical which may be linked to cancer and insulin resistance.
By making simple changes you can help slow global warming and help preserve our planet.
